WHAT'S ON

Katie Spencer – The Queens Head, Belper. September 22nd

Katie Spencer is all of twenty years old, hails from Hull and is widely tipped to be ‘the next big thing’.

If you were lucky enough to catch her at Exile this year, you will know that Katie has a vocal range and maturity of songwriting well beyond her years. And yet it is her guitar work full of little flourishes and embellishments redolent of Bert Jansch and John Martyn that are most immediately striking.

Not surprising then that such veterans as Ralph Mctell, no slouch on the guitar himself, are quick to compare Katie to past masters in her ability to weave eloquent tapestries of song and accompaniment. If John Martyn is perhaps the most obvious reference, it does not obscure the originality of her writing and the new routes she brings to old roots.

In support is Tony Stark, our own master of the strings.

We have so much young musical talent these days that we get to see in Belper thanks to Fleet Arts, Loz Shaw and the Old
Queens Head who put on gems time and time again.
