Belper Arts Centre Open Meeting Announced

On 29th January in the Lion Hotel, Bridge Street, Belper at 7:30pm an open public meeting will be held to discuss the proposed BELPER ARTS CENTRE.

And it’s your chance to have your say.

In partnership with Gary Spendlove, the owner of Slenderella, the Arts Festival and Trail organisers have been looking into the feasibility of converting the building adjacent to Slenderella Retail on Queen Street into a Centre for the Arts.

Soundings have been taken with groups and individuals to establish what people would like to see in any Centre. One thing that has emerged is that the Centre must not jeopardise existing facilities. It’s important that the new Centre does not impact upon the likes of Strutts, Fleet Arts and Number 28 unduly. It’s important that the Centre offers something different, filling the gaps in the needs of artists, educationalists and the disabled.

There is a lot of work to be done but it is hoped to have the Arts Centre up and running by the autumn of this year. Plans and impressions of the building will be on view at the public meeting and it is expected that they will be finalised within a couple of months. The aim is to have a gallery, multi media facilities, performance and workshop areas in a multi-functional space that offers an auditorium that seats up to 150. An internet radio station will run from the premises.

If you can’t attend the meeting contact George Gunby on nonnel@sky.com or telephone 07845 400914 and details will be forwarded to you.
