Clare Washbrook

Current Editor in Chief, as of September 2018, and one of Nailed’s founders in 2015.

Clare is a freelance editor and writer for a wide variety of publications, with specialist focus on politics, language, mythology, history, misinformation, and technology.

She has lived in Belper for over 20 years and has always been involved in local community, school and scout projects, including being Chair of Long Row PTA, running 1st Alton Manor Scouts plays and gang shows, and setting up Belper Goes Green each year.

Clare is the artist who created Belper’s WW1 Poppies, the physical centrepiece of the WW1 Centenary commemorations in the Memorial Gardens in November 2018.  Belper’s WW1 Poppies was a project designed by Clare, which involved the community in crafting The Poppyfall, a waterfall inspired drop of knitted and crocheted poppies from the trees to the ground at the side of the Memorial Gardens, to complement the 223 individual standing Soldier Poppies created with her daughter, artist Madeleine Washbrook, with the names of Belper’s lost soldiers stitched onto leaves by members of the community.

She has been editor in chief of three publications and is a published and award winning poet, who is currently working on a series of mythological novels.

She has a BA (Hons) in Literature, Theatre and Writing and post-graduate qualifications in journalism and editing.
