VE Day in Lockdown – Itinerary

Contrary to headlines in the most appalling newspapers, lockdown continues, in full.

Belper was supposed to have a full day of events for Victory IN Europe Day, with a strong focus on peace and unity across Europe, not a celebration of war.  These events had to be cancelled to comply with new laws to keep people safe.

However Belper Fringe have made sure that some of them continue in a virtual way online.

We got the finalised itinerary at the last minute, but hopefully we’ve got it to you in time to join in.

What is happening when?

11am – 2 minutes silence with the British Legion – please stand on your doorstep

11.15am – Margaret Keys sings a medley of Vera Lynn songs

Decorate your house red, white and blue!
Have a picnic or afternoon tea- lots of our local coffee shops and restaurants are delivering specials so get your orders in.
Please maintain social distancing of 2m (the length of a door) with neighbours.

2pm – Step back in Time with Johnny Victory

3pm – Raise a glass with Lily Taylor-Ward in a toast to the men who died during WWII and then listen to a selection of 1940s songs

8pm – The Staying Inn from Fleet Arts will entertain us with a variety of live music and songs

8.30pm – Listen to an extract from Shirley Mann’s book ‘Lily’s War’

There may be a few surprises throughout the day, so keep an eye on the Belper Fringe Facebook page, through which you can find all of these virtual events.

You can also visit the Belper in Wartime website to find out more about the Belper men who lost their lives in the war.

Below you can find a Poppy to print out, colour in, and stick in your window to show your VE Day peace and unity.
