Milford Photographer In International Garden Photography Awards

An image of Duffield’s Eyes Meadow in autumn was a near-winner for Milford-based photographer Ashley Franklin in the Trees, Woods & Forests category of the International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY) 2020.

Ashley’s photo, taken on a bright, mist-strewn November morning, achieved a Finalist award, which places it just under the Top Three award winners and ahead of the Highly Commended and Commended prize winners.

Now in its thirteenth year, IGPOTY is the world’s premier competition and exhibition specialising in garden, plant, flower and botanical photography.

Ashley’s image will appear in the IGPOTY book and is currently on view at London’s Kew Gardens (until 10th March) in an exhibition showcasing the award winners. The exhibition will also tour the UK, taking in Blenheim Palace, Cannon Hall in Yorkshire and the National Trust’s Dyffryn Gardens in South Wales.

Ashley said, “I am elated with this recognition. This is one of the world’s most prestigious photo competitions, attracting around 19,000 entries from both professionals and amateurs in 50 countries across the globe. This competition is a celebration of not just gardens and flowers but also the parks, fields and forests across the planet, and with my image being selected for the IGPOTY book and touring exhibition, it is wonderful to see Duffield’s Eyes Meadow highlighted as one of the glories of nature!”

“This view of Eyes Meadow is one I see virtually every day when I go to collect my newspaper and it can be an eye-gladdening sight in autumn. This particularly glorious morning, there was a swirl of mist settled between the trees. Writing about an autumn walk, Horatio Clare observed that there were ‘more colours than we have names for.’ My image is like a visual evocation of that.”

Ashley’s image can be seen – and purchased – at two local restaurants: Elaichi in Belper and The New Inn in Milford. The image is also the November page of Ashley’s 2020 Duffield Calendar and he hopes that his award will help sell the remaining copies!

Ashley’s image will also be appearing in a photo book he is currently assembling: The Valley that Changed the World, the first ever photo book of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, due to be published in 2021 to mark the 20th anniversary of the World Heritage Site.
