Youth Voice: On Plastic in School Dinners

At my school, parts of our dinners are served in disposable plastic pots, particularly our puddings.

This wastage is entirely unnecessary, because the rest of our dinners are spooned out from large metal containers.

I feel sure that this goes on in most other Derbyshire state schools.

Though the one plastic pot that each child uses per day may not seem like much, the combined plastic pots from the fifty thousand school meals one day alone will help fill landfill, a big emitter of methane, a greenhouse gas.

So, if you are the parent of a child or a child who cares about the environment and goes to such a school, please write to Derbyshire County Council at:

or email them at: caya.catering@derbyshire.gov.uk to ask them to stop their wastage.

It may seem like writing one letter or sending one email won’t make a difference, but if we all try then perhaps things will change. Myself, and a few other children in year six from Milford School raised this problem and our class have written to the council, but to make change happen we need to show that most people care, not just a few people.
