CREATIVE BELPERENVIRONMENTFEATUREDWHAT'S ON

Transition’s Green Exchange goes all day

Belper’s first food swap event – register now

On Saturday July 27th, the first Belper Growers and Makers – Food & Produce Swap will take place at Transition Belper’s Green Exchange. And, in a packed day, the food swap will be followed by the Fix-It Repair Café from 1pm.

Transition Belper is a local group where like-minded people who are interested in living a more environmentally sound and sustainable lifestyle can get together, share ideas, develop projects and help improve the local environment. Transition Belper’s Green Exchange and café takes place on the last Saturday of each month from 10am – 1pm. The venue is no.28 at the Market Place.

The Food and Produce Swap is aimed at Belper’s small scale home growers and makers; those who, for example, may grow fruit and veg in our gardens and allotments, enjoy baking bread or cakes occasionally, dabble with soap-making or jam-making, or do a craft as a hobby. In short, anyone who grows or makes as an interest or hobby and has surplus stuff that they would like to swap for someone else’s surplus stuff. As a swap there is no exchange of cash involved. On the day, swappers will bring their items (we ask that they are in swappable quantities i.e. no single courgettes or a stray cupcake!). There will then be time to peruse items and complete swap cards. Once this is done the swapping will commence.

If this event interests you, and you would like to take part, please register in advance at http://tiny.cc/julyfoodswap so we know how many people will be participating. Only those who have pre-registered will be able to take part in the event.

As usual some of Transition Belper’s trustees will be on hand to discuss potential projects, living sustainably and reducing carbon footprints. There will also be the usual book exchange plus delicious cakes with tea and coffee.

Repair Café from 1pm

Once the food and produce swap is completed the fixers move in to help you repair stuff instead of taking it to the tip. There is always a need for more experts to help with the fixing and the following appeal was made via Facebook:

We always need volunteers, are you a fixer? doesn’t have to be specific, or can you make cakes? The cafe is run entirely by volunteers and we don’t charge for the service, so to cover our costs we rely on the sale of cakes and drinks. Or do you just want to get involved in this amazing venture? Please get in touch if you can to help us out this month.”

What do you do with a CD player that no longer opens, a toaster that no longer works or a jumper full of moth holes? See https://www.facebook.com/belperfixitshop/ for details but, in essence, the Repair Café is looking to help you repair broken items with expert advice, encounters and inspiration. Bring your items to be fixed or have a chat and learn how to fix things.
