Derbyshire Wildlife Trust Events for Late May

Family Forest School Fun

Come and join Derbyshire Wildlife Trust for our Forest School sessions in the woods at Millfield’s near Carsington Water. During these sessions we will explore the woods and get involved in activities such as learning how to build dens, taking part in imaginative play and arts and crafts. Typically we learn about using tools and how to light fires so we can cook on them.

The next session takes place on Saturday 18th May 2019.

For younger school-aged children the Family Forest School session will take place from 10.30am – 12 noon.

Family Forest School 7 years+, our Forest School session for families with children aged 7 years to 15 years old, will have all the same fun games, crafts and activities as our other family sessions, but are planned with slightly older children in mind. This session will take place from 1.30pm – 3pm.

Meet at Millfield’s car park, Carsington Water, DE6 3JS. The cost is £4 per child and £2 per adult for all sessions. Please wear suitable clothes for the weather. Numbers are limited so booking is essential, call Derbyshire Wildlife Trust on 01773 881188 during office hours.

 

Twilight Safari and Survey

Join Derbyshire Wildlife Trust staff to discover the wildlife that comes out in the evening; look for newts in the ponds, moths and bats flying overhead and other creatures of the night at Hadfields Quarry Nature Reserve.

This event will take place on Monday 20th May from 7.45pm – 11pm at Hadfields Quarry Nature Reserve. Park at Hope Works, Pindale Road, Castleton, Hope Valley, S33 6RP and jump into a Trust vehicle up the lane to the reserve.

The cost is £5 per person. Places are limited so please book yourself in by calling the Trust on 01773 881188 during normal office hours.

Nature Tots – It’s a Bug’s Life

Children aged 2½ and over are invited to bring their adults along to Derbyshire Wildlife Trust’s nature club for pre-school children. Come along on Monday 20th May 2019 to the Whistlestop Centre in Matlock Bath to join in with a playgroup with a difference and go wild.

Nature Tots has a different wildlife theme for every session and encourages tots and parents to get outdoors to learn together. Sessions tend to include a story, outdoor activities, crafts and a snack and drink. This month we will be looking into the fascinating world of insects.

Nature Tots is suitable for accompanied children aged 3 and over. It runs from 10.30am – 12.noon or 12.45pm – 2.15pmand costs £3 per child and £2 for a second child. Places are limited, so please book in advance – contact Derbyshire Wildlife Trust on 01773 881188 during normal office hours.

River Re-meander Celebration Event on the Doe Lea River

Join Derbyshire Wildlife Trust to celebrate the wildlife and the landscape of the Doe Lea River with partners, funders and the amazing local community. This family fun day is packed full of activities to help you enjoy your local surroundings and learn all about the Trust’s National Lottery Heritage Funded project on this site and their work with Chesterfield Borough Council.

This free event will take place oat Norbriggs Flash Nature Reserve S43 3UG 11am – 1pm on Wednesday 22nd May. Meet at the entrance to the reserve on Bent Lane, Staveley Chesterfield, S43 3UG.

Family Day: Drystone walling in Lea Wood

Join Derbyshire Wildlife Trust for a day out in Lea Wood. Come and have some fun family time whilst trying your hand at drystone walling.

We will be meeting at the bus stop, at the junction of Lea Road and Hill Lane, Lea Bridge DE4 5AG on Monday 27th May at 10.30am and the session will end at 3pm. Dress appropriately for the weather. The cost is £4 per adult £2 per child.

Wild Wednesday: Bumblebee Safaris and more

Come and join Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. for a Wild Wednesday at Carsington Water with wild play activities, crafts and trails for families, with the added bonus of a bumble bee safari.

The event, which is suitable for children aged 4 and over who must be accompanied by an adult, takes place on Wednesday 29th May 2019 between 11am and 3pm at the Outdoor Classroom at Carsington Water, DE6 1ST. Sessions can include making mini dens, playing in the mud kitchen, cooking on the camp fire and pond dipping.

Beginners Wildlife ID Courses: The wonderful world of bats

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust would love everyone to enjoy looking at, identifying, reporting and recording the wonderful wildlife in Derbyshire, so they’ve put together a training programme which will take place between May and December 2019.

You don’t have to have any previous experience or expensive kit – just an interest in wildlife and a zest for knowledge.

The training is at beginner’s level and given by either Derbyshire Wildlife Trust staff or friends of the Trust, all of whom wish to share their passion.

The first of these sessions, focusing on the wonderful world of bats, will take place on Saturday 18th May from 4pm – 10.30pm at the Trust’s Headquarters, Sandy Hill Lane, Main Street, Middleton, DE4 4LR. Start your batty training late afternoon, by meeting Steve and Alan Roe for a cup of tea and an introduction to theses extraordinary creatures, then head out and about in Middleton with the bat detectors to see what we can find.

 

All training is £35 per person per day. (NB: If you book two or more separate courses at the same time you will receive a 10% discount.) Places are strictly limited to maximise the learning experience. If you would like to take part, please book on to the course by calling the Trust on 01773 881188.
