How Did Each Councillor Vote On Green Belt Deletion?

On Belper’s social media pages and groups, the Green Belt deletions and threats, have proven to be the most discussed issue of the upcoming local election.

We received several direct requests to publish how each councillor voted on the issue, as well as receiving messages that this is information needed by voters in order to make decisions about how to vote.

Listed below are all current councillors, and their votes.  We have included their party, their ward, and whether they are standing for re-election on Thursday 2nd May 2019.

The following councillors voted to delete the Green Belt, and allocate those sites for building:
  • Trevor Ainsworth – Conservative – Kilburn Ward
  • Dan Booth – Conservative –  Belper Central
  • Joseph Booth – Conservative – Belper North
  • Norman Bull – Conservative – Kilburn, Denby & Holbrook
  • Jack Brown MBE – Conservative – Ironville & Riddings
  • Kevin Buttery –  Conservative – Kilburn, Denby & Holbrook (re-election)
  • Sean Carter – Conservative – Ripley
  • Jackie Cox – Conservative – Belper East
  • Gareth Gee – Conservative – Crich
  • Steven Grainger – Conservative – Heanor West
  • Steve Hayes -Conservative – Swanwick (re-election)
  • Paul Hillier – Conservative – Belper South (re-election)
  • Richard Iliffe – Conservative – Shipley Park, Horsley & Horsley Woodhouse
  • Jane Orton -Conservative – South West Parishes (re-election)
  • Chris Short – Conservative – Duffield
  • Alex Stevenson – Conservative – Shipley Park, Horsley & Horsley Woodhouse
  • David Taylor – Conservative – Alport (re-election)
  • Valerie Taylor -Conservative – Heage & Ambergate (re-election)
  • Henry Thompson – Conservative – Heanor East
  • Valerie Thorpe – Conservative – Wingfield (re-election)
  • Angela Ward – Conservative – Heage and Ambergate
  • David Wilson – Conservatives – Swanwick

Those who caused the Green Belt deletions equal 22. All 22 are Conservative party councillors.


The following councillors voted against deleting the Green Belt:

  • Ron Ashton – Conservative – Ripley & Marehay (re-election)
  • Fay Atkinson – Labour – Belper East
  • Ben Bellamy – Labour – Belper North
  • Marlene Bennett MBE – Labour – Alfreton
  • Gail Dolman -Labour – Alfreton (re-election)
  • Chris Emmas-Williams – Labour – Codnor & Waingroves
  • Brian Gration – Labour – Langley Mill & Aldercar
  • Eileen Hamilton – Labour – Langley Mill & Aldercar
  • Isobel Harry – Labour – Codnor & Waingroves
  • Keiran Hill – Labour – Heanor & Loscoe
  • Tony Holmes – Labour – Ripley
  • Brian Lyttle – Labour – Somercotes
  • John McCabe – Labour – Somercotes
  • Paul Moss – Conservative – Ripley (re-election)
  • Maurice Neville – Labour – Belper Central
  • Sheila Oakes – Labour – Heanor East
  • Paul Smith – Labour – Ironville & Riddings
  • Hannah Stirland – Labour – Heanor & Loscoe
  • John Walker – Labour – Alfreton
  • Mark Wilson – Labour – Ripley  & Marehay

Those who attempted to preserve the Green Belt equal 2119 are Labour Party councillors, 2 are Conservative party councillors.


The following councillor ABSTAINED from voting:

Steven Evanson – Conservative – Duffield (re-election)

Some campaign literature refers to protecting “green fields”. Green Belt and green fields are not the same thing.  It should not be assumed that any literature refering to “fields” refers to Green Belt.  This is a language trick.
