7K Raised For Charity By Open Gardens Event

Belper Open Gardens event at the end of June was a fantastic success once again with around £7000 being raised for charity.

There was plenty for the visitors to see and do; apart from the gorgeous gardens, there was a variety of live music on offer across a few venues, plenty of home made food, plants for sale, quilt, patchwork and wool handcrafting exhibitions and of course, the town’s local shops.

Organiser Kathy Fairweather said: “The weather was extremely kind to the garden openers and the hundreds of visitors who came from far and wide to enjoy the weekend.

“It was wonderful to see so many people making the trip from outside the area specifically to visit the gardens. Their response was fantastic – they loved Belper in general and the gardens in particular.

“Many visitors said they would come back again.”

Apart from the great fun had by both visitors and residents, the weekend raised an enormous amount of funds for a number of charities. Overall, around £7000 was raised.

£2800 of the £7000 went to Belper local groups: Whitemoor Centre day trips fund £ 350, Belper Youth Musical Theatre £315, Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre £300, Hope for Belper £300, Belper Girl Guides £250, S Peter’s Community Garden £300, Sharing not Wasting Food project £300, Chatterbox (social group for adults with learning disability) £300 and Special Friends (A play and support group for families with children with additional needs in Belper) £400.
