New Face At Local Debt Counselling Centre

Charity Christians Against Poverty has announced there will be a new face at Belper’s debt counselling centre.

Jenny Lesley from Belper Baptist Church is to lead the team which works to help people escape overwhelming personal debts.

Jenny said: “It’s a dream come true for me because five years ago, our family was in financial trouble due to redundancy and illness.  CAP helped us then and now I have an opportunity to help others.

“The great thing about CAP’s free service is that it is available to everyone – regardless of age, gender, faith or background. So, if you know things are out of control and you’re stressed, missing meals or sleep, please give me a ring on 0800 328 0006.”

Belper’s branch, which is one of 306 across the UK, opened in 2016. Unusually, it is a town wide project with Belper Community Church and St Peter’s Church together with the Baptist Church joining forces with Hope for Belper to fund the scheme.

CAP debt counselling services are given free of charge, with each person visited in their own home by someone from the Belper debt centre. Working with CAP head office specialists, they are offered support until each becomes debt free.

Jenny said: “It’s heart breaking because the majority of people are trapped into debt by job loss, pay cuts, illness or relationship breakdown – times that are difficult enough, without financial hardship.”
