WHAT'S ON

Festival Of Peace, Love And Co-Operation At Belper Rugby Club. July 21st-23rd. Feat: Steve Tilston, Bric A Brac & Andy Bole

Feel that festivals are becoming that little bit formulaic?

Time to think again.

Coming to a Rugby Club near you, Belper Rugby Club to be precise, this festival will feature stalls reflecting national and local campaigns, dance, writers, silent film, music, real ale and food.

Friday features a diverse range of local talent while Sunday features writers and music. Most events are free apart from Saturday evening’s music where we see the return of Andy Bole (Bonfire Radicals) who, accompanied by a vibes player, will make music as radically different from that of The Bonfires as is possible. In fact the only certainty about an Andy Bole performance is that he will always aim for and achieve new ways of exploring music. Bric A Brac featuring Bella Gaffney play fiery folk guaranteed to lift an audience and Steve Tilston -surely a national treasure-headlines.

The festival name by the way was inspired by Brinsley Schwartz’s seventies hit ‘What’s so funny about peace, love and understanding?’

Many of you will be too young to remember it but may have had it sung to you by doting parents or even grandparents. The sentiments are still fine.

Tickets are a measly £10 and are available at Oxfam Books, King St. Belper or contact mjones572@hotmail.co.uk.
