Top Things to Do With Children This Spring Bank Holiday

Families in Derby can look forward to a brilliant schedule of events taking place across the city this half term, running from Saturday 27 May to Sunday 4 June. From theatre shows to sports camps, there is something for everyone to enjoy! Below is a selection of activities that are bound to give hours of fun to all members of the family.

Don’t Dribble on the Dragon is presented by People’s Theatre Company and is a stage show with magic, family fun and, most importantly, dragons! Audiences can look forward to an hour-long show following Tom – a toddler with a cool older brother, a secret dragon and a dribbling problem that just won’t stop. When Tom’s endless drooling threatens to tear the brothers’ friendship apart can their dragons amazing magic help them put it back together again or will it only end up making things worse?

Based on the fabulous new book by Stephen Lee and with magic designed by the legendary Paul Daniels, this spectacular musical adventure about growing up and the importance of family is the perfect feel good show for big hearted adults and loving little ones alike. Don’t Dribble on the Dragon will be performed at Derby LIVE’s Guildhall Theatre on Sunday 28 May at 2pm and tickets are priced at £11.50.

Markeaton Park’s Mundy Play Centre is sure to be a hit with families this half term as it gives children a place to play and burn some energy. With free entry to the large play areas, full of fun apparatus to climb on and encourage imaginative play, families can pack a picnic and enjoy a low-cost day out. There will also be paid activities available, including crazy golf, canoes, boats, a carousel, bungee trampolines and donkey rides – some age restrictions apply and prices will be listed on site. No pre-booking necessary.

Family Splash is a swimming session specifically designed for families and friends to enjoy the pool through a fun and easy going session with floats and pool toys. The pool is opened for families, allowing all participants to swim at a depth that suits their experience and strength. Family Splash is available at Queen’s Leisure Centre from Monday 29 May to Sunday 4 June at a variety of times and is priced at £3.20 per person and can be booked at reception.

The popular Family Track Cycling sessions will be returning to Derby Arena, where youngsters can have a go at the thrilling sport. Families and children aged 9+ will be given the chance to experience track cycling, which is quickly gaining popularity in the city due to the addition of the velodrome facilities in 2015. No experience is needed for the sessions as qualified coaches will provide advice and the correct equipment for everyone to enjoy the fantastic sport. Family track cycling sessions will be taking place on Monday 29 May at 9.30am, Tuesday 30 May at 1.30pm and Friday 2 June at 3.30pm, with prices starting from £20. To book call 01332 640011.

Sporty types can attend the SportScouts Holiday Camp at Springwood Leisure Centre. These sessions are available from Monday 29 May to Friday 2 June, from 9am and cost £20 for a day full of sports and active fun. SportScourts offer multi-sport coaching sessions where children aged 4-15 years can play and learn a range of different sports with no experience required.
