Warnings Issued After Forecast Of High Winds

The Met Office has issued an Amber Warning for high winds, which covers the whole of Derbyshire.

The warning is from 6am on Thursday 23 February until 8pm on the same day.

The strongest gusts could be as high as 80 mph and are more likely in the middle of the day.

• Gales and high winds can be dangerous particularly if exposed out of doors or during travel.
• Listen carefully to weather forecasts. If you’re planning to travel by car listen to local traffic updates in case roads are blocked by fallen trees or debris.
• If you’re not travelling then stay indoors unless it’s absolutely necessary to go outdoors.
• If you need to check on the wellbeing of friends, relatives or neighbours, do this by telephone.

Derby County Council have got extra staff on standby to remove fallen trees blocking roads. Known flood risk areas are also being checked before bad weather hits to make sure drains are clear to reduce the risk of flooding.

The Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure Councillor Dean Collins, said:

“Storm Doris is predicted to move across the country tomorrow and extremely high winds and rain are forecast for Derbyshire.”

“We are expecting disruption but I can reassure residents that preparations are in place to deal with any incidents that occur on our roads and other council-owned venues.”
