Freedom Feed Em Kicks Off With Success

Belper’s Freedom Feed Em monthly meals kicked off with a successful launch at No 28 on the Market Place on Thursday 23rd June.

The idea is that different volunteers cook a three course vegan meal each month and that those participating pay what they feel the meal is worth. The surplus, once room hire and the cost of food are accounted for, then goes to charity.

Miles Halpin, the man behind the idea, organises similar events in Wirksworth, Derby and Swadlincote and has been building up to getting organised in Belper for some time.

Around 40 diners filled No 28 and enjoyed a starter of garlic bread with glace tomatoes and herbs, a main course of spicy chick pea and butternut squash in coconut sauce, with special rice and salad followed by a dessert of fresh fruits with cinnamon biscuit custard.

A happy Miles enthused: “Thanks to everyone for turning out to make it such a delightful evening, with a truly lovely vibe. Big thanks go especially to Gareth Helen Greenwood and daughter, and to Kev and Linden Weaver and Rob for turning out early to help with prep and setting up the room so beautifully. Together we all made something lovely happen tonight!”

He added: “A grand total of £289.20 was given in pay-what-you-want donations, of which £46 goes to No28 in venue hire and the ingredients cost £73.79 leaving £169.41! Some of this will be spent on the big pans, chopping boards and other bits and bobs we need in the kitchen; the remainder will be donated to Sightsavers http://www.sightsavers.org

The next Belper Freedom Feed Em event will be on Tuesday 26th July.
