Human Library Comes To Belper

Don’t miss the opportunity to read to your heart’s content at Belper’s Human Library at Belper Goes Green on Saturday 4th June between 2:00pm and 4:00pm.

A Human Library is made up of Human books willing to share their stories with you. This could include life stories of a Muslim Woman, Food Anarchist, Atheist, Trans Man, Trans Woman, Eastern European, Hate Incident Victim. This is your chance to read about the lives of those you may never have the opportunity to speak to again.

Lives that have experienced prejudice and richness.

Welcome to my world

The cover of a book can be deceitful, it’s title misleading

Others smell old and inviting, their age and obvious overuse an enticement

A true story can lie hidden in text and off-putting written word

While fictitious lies and fantastical images can still appeal as a much lighter pastime.

Tales have passed on through the ages, often simply by word of mouth

Never a truer story told than of lives lived when someone is willing to listen

Since time immemorial people have chosen the stories to listen to

This ever changing Human Library a gift of understanding, simple opportunity is key.

So here I lie on a shelf overlooked gathering dust as readers pass me by

My cover puts them off, my title is difficult to read, prejudice slips past swiftly.

I’m Disabled you see, no, I’m Fat, actually I’m Religious, I’m openly Transgender

I’m everyone and I’m no-one, my life story will fade, forgotten with time.

“Never judge a book by its cover”, talk with me and listen to my tale

My words can enrich your life, my sign language might amuse or confuse you

The tone of my voice might simply mesmerise you while we share experiences

My courage can make you brave enough to open up the cover and turn these pages I will make you laugh but I may make you cry.

Welcome to my world.
