Continuing Inclusivity not Exclusivity
The Belper Arts Festival was created four years ago under a banner that read “inclusivity not exclusivity”. The mantra continues as the arts community in Belper create events that fill the month of May – and the last day of April!
Amongst the forty plus events you’ll find the Arts Trail, Belper Open Houses Art, Belper celebrated in an exclusive piece of music, new drama by local writers, woollen woods, family concerts, stars of Britain’s Got Talent and prize winning choirs.
The Festival opens with the Mayor’s Charity Concert on 30 April. It features Derwent Brass and the Dalesmen with the money raised going to the Treetops Hospice.
The town centre becomes an art gallery on 1st and 2nd May when the Arts Trail features over 100 artists in almost fifty venues. In addition Captain Dan returns with his motley pirate crew, music on three stages and street entertainment. A new addition is the “Arts Trail Closing Party” with live music in the Memorial Gardens.
Celebrate Belper : The Concert features a specially commissioned piece of music, THE BELPER SUITE. Accompanied by The Festival Strings and Sheila Kay Sly, James Oldrini, a composer born and bred in Belper, brings his musical vision of the town to St Peter’s Church on 7 May. A full evening of entertainment will be hosted by Andy Potter (Radio Derby).
Belper Players are celebrating their 80th birthday with a series of productions including two new plays by local writers Jeff Moule and Sophie Mander. Badapple Theatre bring the WW1 drama / musical “The Thankful Village” to Belper School Theatre.
The Festival closes with a Tudor Drama Double Bill. “Boleyn”, written by George Gunby, tells the story of the last few days in the life of Anne Boleyn. “Elizabeth & Mary” is the creation of Ellie Ward, last seen in Belper in Educating Rita, and Katy McCabe. It imagines a meeting between Queen Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots.
The Music Festival returns to St. Peter’s Church. Organised by concert pianist Beate Toyka and her husband Tim, the programme includes a family concert by Essentially Brass, the Kanneh Mason Family who took Britain’s Got Talent by storm and the brilliant Dale Diva. Hot House Jazz, Eastwood Colliery Male Voice Choir, the MacLachlan Pianistic Family and an evening of piano and pizza bring variety – and food – to the festival. Look out also for a special evening featuring Alex Wilson and Dave Sturt at Number 28, The Market Place.
Belper Open Houses Art takes place for a sixth year over the weekend 28 / 29 / 30 May.
Homes and studios will be open to the public.
Books, Crime and Mystery is a one day celebration of books in general and crime fiction in particular. Best selling author, Stephen Booth who sets his Cooper Fry novels in the Peak District, is the special guest. The Lion Hotel is the setting.
