Plastic Free February: Council Asks Residents To Rate Recycling Centres
Every year Derbyshire County Council invite residents to give feedback about their local household waste recycling centre.
Residents can fill in the short survey about any of the nine sites.
It gives people a chance to highlight what they like and what they think needs improving at the sites in:
- Ashbourne
- Bolsover
- Chesterfield
- Glossop
- Ilkeston
- Loscoe
- Newhall (Bretby)
- Northwood (Darley Dale)
- Buxton (Waterswallows)
Councillor Simon Spencer, the cabinet member for highways, transport and infrastructure, said:
“Recycling has never been more important and we are always looking for ways to improve our recycling centres.
“This includes talking to residents about what we can do to help them recycle more − which helps us to reduce the £38m it costs council tax-payers each year to deal with Derbyshire’s waste.
“So I’d encourage people to take a couple of minutes to tell us how we can improve the services we provide at our recycling centres.”
Dealing with Derbyshire’s waste cost the Council nearly £38m in 2016/17 and these costs are continuing to rise. The more people reduce, reuse and recycle the more money can be saved on these costs and used to support other services.

The survey asks people about the waste recycling sites they have visited. I think it would be useful if the public could be advised about which things are actually recyclable. We know for example that plastic milk containers are recyclable but what about plastic trays that vegetables and cakes come in and the thin plastic outer layer of such grocery items.
According to a programme on BBC Radio 4 recently (“You And Yours”) about a third of the plastic waste we produce in the UK can’t be recycled at present. Apparently many recycling plants have been going bust and new re-processing plants are needed urgently.
