Friends Put Best Foot Forward for Memory Walk

Two friends, who work in care, took part in a charity walk to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society after seeing the effects of the disease first hand.

Rachael Parker, 36, and Jane Skelton- Webb, 43, both care assistants at Milford House Care Home, owned by Milford Care, raised £240 by taking part in the memory walk at Wollaton Park in Nottingham.

Jane’s mum June was diagnosed with vascular dementia four years ago. Seeing the great care she received led to Jane’s decision to become a care assistant at Milford Care.

She said: “My mum has been at The Meadows care home in Alfreton for four years and doesn’t remember who I am. I feel like I’m giving a bit back for her. I had worked in offices and shops all my life but decided I wanted to look after older people after seeing the fantastic care mum received. I love my job, I see everyone as my family.”

The memory walk is a sponsored walk for all ages and abilities to unite together to raise money to defeat dementia. The walks are spread across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

This year more than 110,000 people took part in a memory walk to help raise more than £9 million.

Rachael, said: “Jane wanted to do it for her mum who has Alzheimer’s so I thought I would do it with her.

“We would definitely do it again but will aim for a bigger one next year. They do a 6km one too so we will do that one and get more people involved.

“We are delighted to have raised the amount we did but hopefully we can beat that next year.”
