‘Wind The Bobbins Up’ Craft Competition Launch At The Strutt’s North Mill Museum

Belper is home to many talented craft artisans and enthusiasts, and because of this, Strutt’s North Mill, with funding support from the People’s Postcode Lottery, is launching an exciting new ‘Recycled Design and Making’ Craft Competition this summer called ‘Wind The Bobbins Up’.

Members of the general public are invited to come up with new and inventive ways of upcycling some of the Mill Museum’s hundreds of industrial wooden bobbins into products that are useful or fun, and will reflect the innovative industrial heritage of North Mill. The competition is open to all ages, abilities and it is hoping to attract all manner of makers, designers and inventors, as well as families, social groups and schools.

Winning Categories will consist of: Most Inventive and ingenious; Most commercial; and Best example of making skills. There will be winners announced across the following entrant groups: Artisans; Family; Community Group.

All entries will be offered the opportunity for their designs to be exhibited during the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site’s Discovery Days Festival from 22nd to 30th October. Winning entrants may be commissioned to produce more of their designed product, using additional bobbins, to be sold in the museum’s gift shop. There will also be a cash first prize of £50 for the best overall design, which will be decided by a panel of judges, and smaller prizes available for success in the individual categories.

To enter the Craft Competition please drop down to the Strutt’s North Mill Museum during our opening hours, 11am-4pm Wednesday to Sunday, to register for the competition. Please note there is a £1 competition entry fee, which will secure you a bobbin (valued at £4) to work on.

In addition, there will also be a Free Bobbin Craft Session on Friday 5th and Friday 12th August from 12-3pm in the North Mill’s basement, where visitors will be able to turn a bobbin into a pin cushion, and develop their ideas for the ‘Wind the Bobbins Up’ Competition.

The Postcode Community Trust is a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. 55p from every £2 ticket goes to support good causes across Great Britain and internationally. Tom Wyke, the Fundraising and Volunteer Support Officer at the museum said: “The Postcode Lottery is enabling us to run a range of craft activities that are helping local residents to explore and understand the fantastic heritage of this area.”
